Natural wine. Small plates. Good company.
The bar
Bar Heretic opened in 2026 at 270 Clermont Avenue, on the corner of a block that Charles McMickens has been building on since 1999. The name is intentional. Natural wine — the kind we pour here — is still considered heretical in some circles. We take that as a compliment.
The bar is a partnership between Charles McMickens and Saul and Erin. [Saul and Erin bios to be added — see copy document.]
The Infatuation called us a bar with a focus on bread — and they weren't wrong. We make our own sourdough, our own focaccia, our own crackers. We sell loaves to go. Someone once left with a portion of our sourdough starter, and we're still not entirely sure how she charmed her way into that.
The wine list is built around low-intervention producers — bottles chosen for character, not convention. It changes. That's the point. Every visit is different. Thursday through Sunday, Bar Heretic is a wine bar. Walk-ins only. No reservations.
We're part of the DeKalb Collective — a family of businesses built by the McMickens family on DeKalb Avenue in Fort Greene. Heritage Wines, our sister shop, is around the corner at 237 DeKalb. Soulmate, the neighborhood's licensed dispensary, is next door. The collective has been building on this block since 1999. Bar Heretic is its newest chapter.
What we do
A rotating selection of organic, biodynamic, and low-intervention wines from small producers across Europe and beyond. Something new every visit.
Food at the bar. Thoughtfully made, designed to drink with. Savory and satisfying — worth ordering another glass for.
On our off-days, the space is run by Sage Geyer — tastings, producer nights, cannabis and wine pairings, and private buyouts. See what's on.
"Great staff with good quality wine — can't wait to come back for the food."

The Bar Heretic space is one of Fort Greene's best options for a private event that feels genuinely considered rather than generic. Intimate without being cramped. Serious about wine without being precious about it. Available Monday through Wednesday.
Ticketed wine tastings for 20 to 25 guests, guided pours, housemade bread throughout. Producer nights with visiting winemakers. Cannabis and wine pairing dinners — products curated by our neighbors at Soulmate, wines from our cellar, guidance throughout.
